  • Freiburg wins the Swiss duel with hosts Davos in the Spengler Cup semi-finals 4-2.
  • In its third participation in the Spengler Cup, Freiburg made it to the final for the first time.
  • The Straubing Tigers, who defeated Team Canada 4-2, are waiting there on Tuesday afternoon.

Fribourg-Gottéron is about to write an ice hockey fairytale at the Spengler Cup in Davos. On December 22nd, the Saanestadt team parted ways with their coach Patrick Emond due to continued lack of success, and now the “Dragons” will play for the first title in the club’s history in Davos on Tuesday. The last opponent of neo-coach Lars Leuenberger’s team will be the Straubing Tigers from Germany.

Bertschy with the game-winning goal

Against tournament host Davos it took until the 56th minute before the course for victory could be set. Christoph Bertschy was responsible for the game-winning goal. All he had to do was push an exemplary assist from Samuel Walser over the line. Jacob de la Rose then made everything clear with a goal into the empty goal (59th).

Clear Freiburg dominance at the start

Freiburg had rewarded itself late for a committed performance; Gottéron clearly dominated the HCD at times, especially in the first third. The result, however, seemed like sheer mockery at that point. Freiburg were logically in the lead thanks to a beautifully played power play goal from Linden Vey. But then Davos turned the game around within 137 seconds.

First Matej Stransky was successful with a loose shot that didn’t make Freiburg keeper Reto Berra look too good. Immediately afterwards, Yannick Frehner sank an unchallenged rebound from close range. The “Dragons” didn’t know what happened to them, as they had 22 goals to their name. Only 9 of them were on goal, but that was still more than all of Davos’ shots combined (7, 5 of which were on goal).

No 17th title for Davos and Team Canada

From the second third onwards, the home team was able to keep things balanced. After a goalless middle period, it was Vey who scored again in the power play and was able to equalize 2-2 (47th). The rhythm of the game was disrupted by several penalties before Bertschy was able to succeed as mentioned.

Defending champion Davos, like Team Canada, will miss out on playing for their 17th Spengler Cup victory on Sunday and thus become the sole record holders.

This is how it continues

Freiburg will face the Straubing Tigers in the final on Tuesday afternoon at 12:10 p.m. (live on SRF zwei).
