Lazio vs Atalanta predictions
Atalanta have literally been unstoppable in Serie A over the last three months. They head to Rome this weekend looking to extend their winning run from 11 top-flight games to 12.
No opponent has taken so much as a point off Atalanta since Bologna held them to a 1-1 draw in late September. Since then Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have put Genoa, Venezia, Hellas Verona, Monza, Napoli, Udinese, Parma, Roma, AC Milan, Cagliari and Empoli to the sword.
That extraordinary run has lifted Atalanta to the summit of the standings in Italy. Their lead is slender, though. Napoli are just two points behind, while Inter have a game in hand and a three-point deficit to make up.
Lazio are not too far back either. They trail Atalanta by six points, so a win here would move them within touching distance of the current league leaders.
There is no longer any doubt that at Dea are title contenders. Granted, Atalanta do not have the history of clubs like Juventus, Inter or AC Milan. Even Lazio have a better track record having won the scudetto twice before.
However, Atalanta have been consistently impressive in Serie A over the last few years. That is largely to the credit of their manager, who has had to oversee a couple of rebuilds since he took the job in 2016. This is the third side Gasperini has had in Bergamo – and it might just be his best yet.
This version of Atalanta are no strangers to winning trophies. They scooped up the Europa League last term, comprehensively beating the favourites Bayer Leverkusen in the final. That experience will stand them in good stead this term, notwithstanding the differences between knockout football and a domestic league campaign.
Lazio are outsiders, with most observers of the belief that the champions will be one of Atalanta, Inter or Napoli. Yet a victory here would keep them in the conversation for now at least.
Lazio suffered a 6-0 defeat by Inter in their last game at the Stadio Olimpico and they will be keen to make amends in front of their own fans on Saturday. Both teams will be looking to end 2024 on a high in their last outing of the calendar year.

On the face of it, this might seem like a curious selection. Lazio and Atalanta have each drawn just one Serie A game in 2024/25. These two teams tend to win, and when they do not win they usually lose.
Atalanta’s 11-match victorious streak is a wonderful achievement, especially when you consider they are still not among the league’s biggest spenders.

But their performances in their last two outings, narrow triumphs over Cagliari and Empoli, were not quite as emphatic as what went before. Gasperini’s team still found a way to win, but only by one goal on both occasions.
Lazio may have lost 6-0 to Inter at the Stadio Olimpico a fortnight ago, but they actually have the second-best home record in the division on a points-per-game basis.
A draw, you feel, would be a decent outcome for both teams.

Atalanta are not only the best team in Serie A right now; they are also the most entertaining alongside Inter.
Both teams have found the back of the net 42 times. In Atalanta’s case that works out as 2.47 goals per game. Twelve of their 17 matches have featured more than 2.5 goals.
The equivalent figure for Lazio is 14. Only three times this term have the club from the capital been involved in a game containing two goals or fewer.
All of which suggests the odds on this wager are incredibly generous. The evidence indicates that attacks should get the better of defences when these two teams go at it this weekend.

Charles De Ketelaere to score any time
Charles De Ketelaere has had quite the year. After failing to make the grade at AC Milan, he joined Atalanta at the start of the 2023/24 season.
De Ketelaere had a direct hand in 25 goals across all competitions last season by either scoring them or setting them up.
He was particularly effective after the turn of the year and has been one of the standout players in Italy in 2024.
De Ketelaere has either scored or assisted 17 goals across Serie A and the Champions League already in 2024/25. He is frequently the man Atalanta look to for inspiration in the final third.
Against Lazio this weekend, we expect De Ketelaere to stand up and be counted once more.
