Italian food is more expensive than duck. Where do these prices come from?

At the Warsaw market in Bronisze in December 2024, the prices of basic vegetables indicated that cabbage and parsley had become more expensive compared to the previous year. A kilogram of parsley costs PLN 4, and sauerkraut costs as much as PLN 5.25.

Italian – PLN 8.99, four duck wings – PLN 7.99 – this is the price for products for cooking the broth you have to pay in the Auchan supermarket. How is it that soup meat is cheaper than a few carrots? – asks a reader of “Gazeta Wyborcza”.

The reason is difficult weather conditions, such as spring frosts and summer drought, which affected crops. Weather anomalies, such as heat and hailstorms, destroy crops, which further increases the prices of vegetables – we read.

Markets benefit from discounts

Meat prices, including the recently popular duck, are falling thanks to the industrialization of breeding and the marketing strategies of retail chains. It is profitable for markets to lower meat prices to attract customers who will also buy other, more expensive products. Poles are more willing to eat duck, which is returning to the table as a healthier alternative to chicken.

Duck meat production in Poland has been growing dynamically since 2013 – in 2023 it increased by 8.9%. The increase in popularity also applies to guinea fowl and turkey meatwhich are perceived as valuable in terms of taste and nutrients – we read.

In parallel to the problems with poultry, bluetongue disease appeared, affecting cattle and sheep farms. Although Poland reacted later than other countries, China and Russia introduced a ban on imports of products derived from animals affected by the disease.
