Tottenham Hotspur have made it into the semi-finals of the EFL Cup thanks to a 4-3 win over Manchester United.

The North Londoners are desperate to end their 16-year trophy drought this season. Ange Postecoglou has publicly claimed that he always lifts silverware in his second year.

That has put more pressure on Spurs, but they are now a step closer to achieving that goal following their win over Ruben Amorim’s side on Thursday night.

Postecoglou was particularly impressed by one Tottenham player against the Red Devils.

Ange Postecoglou raves about Dominic Solanke’s work rate in Tottenham vs Manchester United

Dominic Solanke was one of Tottenham’s best players against Manchester United.

A lot has been said about the England international in recent months. Some felt that Spurs made a mistake signing him over other more established strikers.

However, Solanke has stepped up for Tottenham, and after scoring against Chelsea last week, he bagged a brace against Manchester United on Thursday night.

Postecoglou was delighted with Solanke’s goals, but what impressed him more was the 27-year-old’s work rate throughout the game.

The Tottenham boss branded that as ‘unbelievable’.

He said, as per London: “He has been outstanding, mate. Scored against Chelsea a week ago so people keep going on about his goals, but it’s his work rate.

“What he gives the team beyond his goals are unbelievable.

“His goals were quality tonight. Good striker’s goals. The first one to react and the second one, calm and composed and a great finish. We would love to give him a rest but he just keeps going and going and it is a credit to him and all the boys.”

Solanke’s output in the Premier League has to improve

Solanke has done a good job since joining Tottenham.

The Englishman had his troubles in his previous spells at big clubs – Chelsea and Liverpool. There were concerns over how he would fare at Spurs, but it has been good so far.

However, Solanke’s numbers need to go up in the Premier League.

Competition Games Goals Assists Minutes per goal
Premier League 13 5 2 230.2
Europa League 6 2 2 132
EFL Cup 3 2 0 121
Dominic Solanke’s stats for Tottenham in 2024/25 (correct as of 20/12/2024)

The numbers show above that Solanke’s minutes-per-goal ratio is significantly better in the Europa League and EFL Cup than in the Premier League.

We’re sure Solanke would want to improve those stats in the coming months, and the brace against Manchester United should give him a lot of confidence.

Up next for Tottenham is a game against Liverpool. It will be interesting to see how Solanke will fare against his old club.
