What’s next for Ontario County after landfill closure decision? Committee meets to discuss options

The Ontario County Board of Supervisors has decided to close the county landfill by the end of 2028, marking a significant shift in local waste management, The Finger Lakes Times reports. Following the decision, the Planning & Environmental Quality Committee agreed to begin developing a new 10-year Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) to replace the current one, which expires this year.

Carla Jordan, head of the county’s Department of Sustainability and Solid Waste Management, noted that $80,000 has been allocated for a consultant to assist with the plan. Casella Waste Systems, which operates the landfill, will oversee its maintenance for 30 years post-closure.

In related news, the committee endorsed Casella’s request to excavate additional cover soil from a nearby 40-acre parcel, pending environmental review and permit adjustments.
