In the South, an unusual excitement is taking over Pierrefonds airport this Saturday, December 14, 2024. The first commercial flight since October is scheduled for this morning. Operated by the regional airline Air Austral, this is a flight to Mauritius.
In great difficulty, just like the airport's joint union, the regional company has strengthened its historic partnership with Pierrefonds, with two flights per week, during the southern summer holidays.
This resumption of activity at Pierrefonds airport materializes during the morning. Indeed, at 10:05 a.m., an Air Austral plane from Mauritius is due to land.
The aircraft must take off again less than an hour later, at 10:50 a.m., bound for Sister Island. Since the Covid crisis three and a half years ago, the southern airport has never returned to regular activity.
Enough to arouse the concern of employees. On November 12, there were around twenty of them speaking to the media. The new president of the airport's joint union, Patrice Thien Ah Koon, had not yet visited them. This resumption of flights today offers them precarious relief.
Air Austral is only committed until the end of the holidays, until January 18, 2025, to operate these two weekly rotations between Mauritius and Reunion.
