On the night of December 12-13 and in the morning, Russia launched more than 290 missiles and drones at Ukraine's energy facilities.

Ukrainian thermal power plants were “severely damaged” by massive Russian strikes on Friday morning, private electricity supplier DTEK said. “This is the twelfth massive attack against the Ukrainian energy sector” this year alone, he added in a press release reported by AFP.

“The enemy continues to terrorize, once again the energy sector is under major attack,” commented Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko.

In detail, of the 93 missiles launched, 81 were intercepted. In addition, out of 193 drones, 191 were also apprehended or diverted from their target, RFI reported.

No deaths to report

“Russia wants to deprive us of energy. Instead, we must deprive it of the means of terror. I reiterate my call for the urgent delivery of 20 NASAMS, HAWK or IRIS-T air defense systems,” Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X.

The attack caused no casualties, but it is not the first time that Russia has attacked Ukraine's energy facilities. The latest dates back to November 17 when more than 200 missiles and drones were fired.

About a month earlier and in order to help Ukraine, Europe had announced that it wanted to help the country keep “the lights on” this winter with material and financial aid.
