GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – At next Tuesday’s Gulfport City Council meeting, members will vote to approve or deny a new Gulfport flag, motto and seal.
The December 17 meeting agenda details the new designs.
“The City of Gulfport recently celebrated its 125th Anniversary and with that notable milestone, the need for a distinctive city flag, representative of Gulfport’s past, present and future, became obvious,” the agenda reads.
Gulfport announced the city would be forming a Flag Commission in January and began accepting submissions through an online portal in August.
After submissions closed in September, the Commission narrowed the flag designs down to one, which will be voted on Tuesday.
The City says the proposed flag “reflects elements that convey the city’s culture, personality and character and includes colors and shapes used [sic] related to physical characteristics as well as ideals embodied in Gulfport’s history, direction, and people.”
Gulfport’s current flag was designed about 50 years ago but hasn’t been flown for years.
Gulfport’s proposed new motto is “Anchored in Excellence.”
“Recurring themes during discussions as to the [sic] what a new motto should be focused on the successes of the City of Gulfport in recent years, including its remarkable recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, developments focused on improving Gulfport’s profile as a tourist destination and the spirit and resilience of Gulfport’s people,” the agenda reads.
A new seal is also on the agenda, incorporating the proposed motto.
The city says the lighthouse represents a guiding beacon lighting the way for a bright future, the anchor represents stability and the city’s maritime heritage, the water represents natural resources and the ship’s wheel represents charting a steady course for the future of Gulfport as a vibrant coastal city.
If passed, the City of Gulfport encourages residents, businesses and Gulfport governmental entities to fly the new flag and utilize the new seal and motto “as a demonstration of community pride and recognition of the strength of Gulfport’s heritage and the promise of Gulfport’s future.”
