The internet is being flooded with information about Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old who has now been identified as the primary suspect in the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The scion of a wealthy Baltimore family was arrested on Monday at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Per the BBC, Mangione is being charged with the murder of Thompson, who was fatally shot in the back last Wednesday outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, New York.
Mangione’s friends and former colleagues have expressed their shock after hearing the news. “I can make zero sense of it,” one of Mangione’s former housemates R.J. Martin said, per CNN. “It’s unimaginable.”

Mangione hails from an influential Italian-American family in Baltimore and is the son of Louis, 71, and Kathleen Zannino Mangione, 60, according to the Daily Mail.
Louis is reportedly the owner of Lorien Health Services, while Kathleen runs a boutique travel company and is from a prominent Italian American family.
Luigi’s paternal grandfather, Nicholas Mangione Sr, was a self-made real estate developer. The New York Times notes that Luigi’s grandparents bought the Turf Valley Country Club in Maryland in the 1970s and expanded their business ventures by purchasing the Hayfields Country Club too. The family also owned the local radio station WCBM. Luigi had a privileged upbringing and went to an Ivy League school.
