Shortly before the last match day of the year, FC Zurich pulled off a real surprise. Not on the field, but on the transfer market: Steven Zuber is moving to Zurich with immediate effect, where he will have a contract until 2026.
The former Swiss international was eliminated from AEK Athens this season after being a regular for three seasons. Zuber took his first steps in professional football with the Grasshoppers, the other Zurich city club. The 33-year-old appeared in a total of 146 competitive games for GC before he first played for CSKA Moscow and later for Hoffenheim, VfB Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt. Zuber played 56 times for the Swiss national team and scored eleven goals.
“I had excellent conversations with the presidential couple Canepa and with sports director Milos Malenovic. “I am pleased to be returning to Switzerland despite many other offers from abroad because I am very impressed by the project at FC Zurich,” Zuber is quoted as saying in the press release.
After a good start to the season, the Zurich team are currently in fifth place after failing to win any of the last five championship games.
