The most prominent of these prisons was Saydnaya prison in the Damascus countryside, where video footage showed a number of detainees leaving after the arrival of armed organizations.
The factions said that they began storming Saydnaya prison in the Damascus countryside, at dawn on Sunday, before indicating that a number of prisoners inside were being removed.
Saydnaya prison is considered one of the most fortified Syrian military prisons, and is located near Saydnaya Monastery, 30 kilometers north of Damascus.
The factions also opened Adra Central Prison in the Damascus countryside to all prisoners.
Sources of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported seeing prisoners spread out in several areas, including the international road near the Al-Wafideen camp, carrying their bags and confirming that “the prison doors were opened for them.”
In Homs, police officers opened the doors of the central prison to prisoners, without providing any explanations.
After they left, a number of prisoners gathered in the garage area near the Air Force Intelligence branch.
The factions also took control of the Political Security branch on the outskirts of the city of Hama in the center of the country.
Also in Aleppo, the factions evacuated many detainees from inside the city’s central prison after completely controlling it.
Several sources confirmed on Sunday morning that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had left the country.
The factions announced, in messages published via the Telegram application, what they considered “the end of this dark era and the beginning of a new era for Syria.”
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Reuters announced on Sunday that Al-Assad “left the country to an unknown destination.”
