Kylian Mbappé is going through a difficult phase in his brilliant career so far at Real Madrid: Once again the French superstar misses a penalty, and again the major Spanish club has to pay dearly for it.
The defense makes a mistake – and superstar Kylian Mbappé misses again from the spot: champions Real Madrid suffered a bitter setback in the hunt for Hansi Flick’s FC Barcelona. After three league wins in a row, the Champions League winner lost 1:2 (0:0) in a heated game at Athletic Bilbao, mainly due to their own failures.
Alex Berenguer (53′) gave the hosts the lead; the Royals had had little idea offensively beforehand. However, national player Antonio Rüdiger then took a penalty, and as in the Champions League against Liverpool (0-2), Mbappé missed. Jude Bellingham (78th) equalized, but a little later Gorka Guruzeta (80th) benefited from a momentous loss of the ball by Fede Valverde in the middle of Madrid’s pressure phase.
After Liverpool’s missed shot, Mbappé had recently refrained from taking responsibility for the penalty against Getafe FC, but now he boldly attacked again – and failed. The Spanish sports newspaper “Marca” poured harsh words on the superstar after his new failure: “Mbappé is starting to look like he’s in a horror film. After torturing himself for an hour without having anything to offer, the game gave him the chance for salvation and he wasn’t there again.”
The Whites failed to reduce the gap to Barca to one point. Flick’s team had ended its short negative run the day before with a clear win (5:1) in Mallorca and had pulled away again. However, Real played one game less.
