National Assembly: Michel Barnier heckled during a tribute to a former deputy: News

While he was speaking to pay tribute to former MP René Couanau, who died on November 30, Michel Barnier was notably interrupted by LFI elected official Sophia Chikirou, triggering the ire of part of the hemicycle and of the President of the National Assembly.

A new incident at the National Assembly, Tuesday December 3. On the eve of the vote on the motions of censure tabled by the National Rally and the New Popular Front, Michel Barnier responded to the deputies. The Prime Minister wanted to pay tribute to former MP René Couanau, who died on November 30, at the age of 88.

“René Couanau was a very active deputy for Ille-et-Vilaine. He was also a great mayor of Saint-Malo. I was, a very long time ago, a member of the same ministerial cabinet as him”declared Michel Barnier, before being heckled by left-wing deputies, and in particular LFI elected official Sophia Chikirou, who can be heard shouting: “On s'en mistake !”. The scene was captured by BMFTV.

“It’s scandalous”

This outing did not please Yaël Braun-Pivet at all: “Two minutes, Mr. Prime Minister please. I expect us to respect each other in this chamber. We are talking about the memory of a man who has just died. It’s scandalous”. Several deputies, notably from the presidential coalition, stood up to applaud the President of the National Assembly.

Michel Barnier then spoke again, calling for respect and calm in the hemicycle. While responding to communist deputy André Chassaigne, the Prime Minister continued: “I happen to think, no doubt, like you, that this National Assembly has changed a lot”.
