True or false. Will cars with a Crit'Air 3 sticker be able to drive in major cities?

Several posts on social networks, notably on TikTok and on from January 1, 2025.

Some Internet users share a video in which we hear a voice saying “that on January 1, 2025, there are 47 metropolises, in these areas, there will be a driving ban for all diesel vehicles before 2011, gasoline before 2006”. But that's wrong.

Vehicles with Crit'Air 3 stickers will still be able to circulate in most major metropolises in 2025. They will be prohibited from passing only in the low-emission zones of and , as well as in the urban areas of and .

The voice heard in the video is that of Pierre Chasseray, the spokesperson for the 40 million motorists association. He then responded to an interview with RMC in September 2022. At the time, he denounced the future generalization of low-emission zones, ZFEs, which were going to be set up in 43 urban areas, and not in 47, as he said. . But, contrary to what he said, there was never any question that all these ZFEs would prohibit their access to Crit'Air 3 stickers in 2025. Only five of these ZFEs were supposed to restrict the circulation of these polluting cars from January 1, 2025.

Except that, since this interview, things have changed. Air quality has improved in some places, so the government has decided to ease up in March 2024. The ZFEs of , Starsbourg and , which were supposed to impose traffic restrictions on Crit'Air 3 stickers in 2025 are no longer obliged to do so.

Finally, the ZFEs, of which there are currently 12, will in fact extend to around thirty other urban areas on January 1, but only two will be obliged to prohibit the circulation of cars with a Crit'Air 3 sticker, namely the urban areas of Paris and Lyon. Those of Montpellier and Grenoble will do so voluntarily.

Other EPZs have different levels of restrictions. Some only prohibit cars that are registered before 1997 and not classified, others Crit'Air stickers 4 and 5.
