December starts with a cold, wintry week – Finger Lakes Weather

Early Week Snow Showers

Winds across the region have shifted to the northwest, ending the intense lake effect snow events across the snowbelts to our west and north, and bringing lake effect into our region instead.

Early Monday morning, the lake effect was disorganized, with a spray of snow showers coming off Lake Ontario across the northeastern half of the region.

Occasional flurries and a few brief squalls will continue across these areas throughout the day today, though the activity will likely become more sparse during the midday and first half of the afternoon.

There should be a corresponding uptick in activity late this afternoon and evening, persisting through the night and into Tuesday morning.

Outside of the snow showers, skies will remain mostly cloudy this morning, but some sun should break through this afternoon.

Individual bouts of snow will generally not be long lasting and accumulations will be limited by the on and off, scattered nature of the snows. Some places may locally see an inch or two today, but most areas will see just a coating or nothing at all.

The snow will have a little easier time accumulating overnight, and some localized pockets could see several inches. This will especially be possible across Wayne, northern Cayuga, and Onondaga counties.

Accumulations on Tuesday during the daytime will again be limited to a localized inch or so.

Temperatures both Monday and Tuesday will be similar, with highs mostly in the low 30s with a few pockets of both mid 30s and upper 20s. Temperatures overnight will drop to the mid 20s across the north and along the lakeshores, with low 20s and upper 10s across the south.

Northwest winds will occasionally become more westerly throughout Monday and Tuesday. Wind speeds today will be up to 10 mph, while Tuesday morning may have some wind speeds over 10 mph.

Winds turn to the southwest and south on Wednesday, increasing to 15-20 mph. Temperatures will not respond to the wind shift, though, with highs still locked in the low 30s.

Some widespread light afternoon snow will accompany the wind shift. Most areas will see snow in the sky, but accumulations will be limited to an inch or two for most.

Colder Before Warmer

A cold front will move through the area early Thursday morning, possibly accompanied by a burst of snow and wind. This will be something to watch for over the coming days.

Behind the front, winds will turn to the west and northwest, increasing to speeds around or even over 20 mph. Wind gusts should easily be over 40 mph and a few gusts to 50 mph will not be out of the question.

Lake effect will start to get organized later in the day as temperatures drop during the afternoon. The strong winds may make it difficult for the snow bands to organize, though. How much snow falls and in what areas remains too uncertain to tell at this point.

Flurries and squalls are expected Thursday night into Friday morning. Dry air should begin to limit the snow later Friday and wind speeds will drop.

Friday will start with lows in the 10s and low 20s and afternoon highs will only make it to the mid 20s. Widespread 10s are expected Saturday night.

Winds will turn back to the southwest on Saturday, leading to a few snow showers as slightly milder air tries to push back into the region. Afternoon highs Saturday will return to around 30 degrees.

Sunday is currently looking dry with a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the mid 30s.

Next week as a whole looks milder, though exactly how warm it gets is uncertain with a large spread of possibilities showing on the models.
