Storms, thunderstorms, floods… the weather is getting out of hand in France
This first week of December and therefore of meteorological winter is marked by two influences, between the depressions circulating over northern Europe and the Azores anticyclone sometimes stretching towards France. Thus, the sky promises to be changing, between disturbed passages and periods of calm, all with fairly fluctuating temperatures.
This more or less seasonal period should keep us busy until the start of the weekend before the arrival of a polar air mass, synonymous with cold and potentially snowy weather from Sunday…
Very fluctuating temperatures
The first lightly rainy front of the series crosses the country this Monday, stretching from New Aquitaine to the Grand Est. A trailing sky sets in behind with showers, mainly near the Channel coast. The south-eastern quarter remains away from the risk of rain with only cloudy skies. Temperatures have started to rise again since no frost has been observed in the plains, while the maximums still drop in the west from 12 to 16°C, and up to 20°C in Roussillon.
On Tuesday, France will be between two disturbances. The rains from the day before will leave the country from the north-east while the new precipitations will already reach Brittany with a strengthening southerly wind. In between, the weather will be dry, but often cloudy while the sun will shine in the Mediterranean under the effect of the mistral and the tramontane blowing up to 80 km/h. The mercury will start to drop again with freshness when you wake up and only 4 to 8°C in the northeast quarter in the afternoon.
It's back for a spin on Wednesday with further rain expected, mainly between the southwest and central regions. The wind will shift to the northwest sector at the rear with a gale expected over northern Brittany at the end of the night with gusts of up to 100 km/h. The said disturbance will bring a little snow to Auvergne and the Pyrenees while the sun will resist from the eastern flank to the Mediterranean rim. Small frosts will also be possible at daybreak from the north-eastern borders to the Massif Central.
Risk of snow in the plains this weekend
The parade of disturbances will continue at the end of the week with further rain expected in the west on Thursday, shifting eastward as the hours pass. Sun and wind will continue in the southeastern regions. Morning frosts will increase in all eastern regions while a slight warm spell will occur in the west in the afternoon with 14-15°C possible in Brittany.
On Friday we will return to rainy weather from the Pyrenees to the Alps with snowflakes only at high altitude. Clouds, clearings and showers will alternate behind while the sun will continue to shine without difficulty in the Mediterranean. The mild weather will assert itself with minimums sometimes in double digits and maximums approaching 18°C in Roussillon.

This increase in temperatures will be ephemeral since the flow will gradually move towards the northern sector over the next weekend. Polar air will thus arrive and cause the mercury to drop significantly. Sunday afternoon, the maximums will no longer exceed 2 or 3°C in the east. This change in air mass will be accompanied by rainy weather on Saturday, with snow in the mountains at increasingly lower altitudes. On Sunday, showers could occur almost everywhere, with snowflakes possibly reaching the plains. Winter seems to be coming to France in the medium term, to be continued…
