Damage to Parilly park after storm Bert. (@Vincent Guiraud)
The day after storm Bert passed through the Rhône department and the metropolis of Lyon, it was time to take stock of the damage. A fairly heavy toll for the Parilly park where around 300 trees fell.
Update at 2:20 p.m.: If the management of the Parilly park mentioned on Tuesday morning the figure of 150 to 200 trees affected, the park team has cataloged the damage more widely and now counts around 300 trees uprooted by the wind.
The damage is impressive and the Parilly park teams are still hard at work this Tuesday morning to assess it precisely. The day after the passage of storm Bert and the very strong wind, between 150 and 200 trees were down in the park located to the east of the Lyon Metropolis.
A gust of 142 km/h recorded
With a gust of 142 km/h measured Monday within the park by the Lyon Météo station, many trees, mostly conifers, did not resist. “It's a sad day for the park” begins Pierre Athanaze, vice-president of the Métropole de Lyon in charge of the management of large parks. “The gale was exceptional and the damage is historic“, he continues.
“In a wink of fate, the delivery of the new trees was scheduled for this Tuesday, but for now our teams are mobilized to make the park accessible again“, explains Benoît Lagier, manager of the Parilly park. Each year 2000 trees are planted in Parilly and between 200 and 300 are cut down.
The park closed for several days
If the precise inventory of trees affected by the storm was still in progress this Tuesday at midday, the park should remain closed to the public for several days. “We will have several weeks of work to erase the traces of this storm” adds Benoit Lagier.
In the metropolis of Lyon, only around ten trees belonging to the community fell at the height of the storm, but the metropolitan teams stepped up their interventions, most of the time for private trees that fell due to the wind. . The Metropolis has recorded 70 interventions since this weekend.
