Rhone. Lyon lawyer Gilles Devers, specialist in international law, has died

Lawyer at the Lyon bar, blogger, teacher-researcher and lecturer, Gilles Devers died this Tuesday at the age of 68.

Recognized specialist in international law and author of the work East Jerusalem under the protection of international law M^e Devers had particularly distinguished himself in the defense of Palestinian and Sahrawi causes. He was part of the group of lawyers who took the Palestinian cause to international courts and obtained the arrest warrants against Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Defender of the Palestinian cause”

The website Umma intended for the Muslim community, salutes this Tuesday a “tireless defender of international law and the Palestinian cause”.

Despite his illness, M^e Devers was still very present on the Lyon scene. Lawyer for the Collective in Support of the Palestinian People 69, his name was associated with the conference “Gaza, war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide? Israel in court” scheduled for 1^is February but which had been canceled by the University of Lyon 2 at the request of the prefecture. In June 2023, he protested against threats to cancel a public meeting with the Franco-Palestinian political activist, Salah Hamouri, finally authorized by the administrative court.

M^e Gilles Devers was also the lawyer of Kamel Kabtane, the rector of the Great Mosque of Lyon. We owe him a Dalloz on Muslim law and religion with Chems-Eddine Hafiz, the Franco-Algerian business lawyer currently rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris.
