Brigitte Macron spoke for the first time about the Mazan trial on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Monday November 25, 2024. The First Lady recalled her support for all women victims of rape and in particular Gisèle Pelicot.
Two and a half months ago, one of the most publicized trials of 2024 in France opened before the Vaucluse Criminal Court, that of the Mazan rapes, which mainly involves Dominique Pelicot. The septuagenarian is accused of having contacted men on the site Coco to suggest they have sex with his wife – Gisele Pelicot -, now divorced, while under the influence of unwanted chemical submission. In other words, it would therefore have suffered several dozen rapes while being druggedbetween the months of July 2011 and October 2020, at her home, and without her having given her consent.

49 men are being prosecuted for rape et two others are for sexual assault, and for attempting to rape Gisèle Pelicot in the same context. Most of the accused denied the facts at the time of their hearing, after their psychological profile was drawn up and described by experts at the Avignon courthouse over several weeks. The question that arises is whether or not they were fully aware of their actions or whether they were manipulated by Dominique Pelicot.
Brigitte Macron believes that this trial is essential
Beyond personal considerations, the Mazan rape trial is for Gisèle Pelicot an opportunity to shine the spotlight on what she considers to be a “macho society”because it is according to her “time we change our outlook on rape”. “I have seen individuals appear on the stand who deny rape and I have a lot of difficulty facing this banality. I want to say to these men: 'At what point when you enter this room does Ms. Pelicot tell you gave consent?', 'At what point in the face of this inert body do you become conscious?', 'At what point are you not going to report it to the police?'”she expressed during her last appearance at the bar last week. Words that could have completely challenged Brigitte Macron who in turn expresses himself on the impact of the Mazan trial and on the fundamental questions it raises.
