Kyrie Irving provides extra lift as Mavs power past illness, injury and Hawks in Atlanta

ATLANTA — The Dallas Mavericks entered the finale of their three-game road trip a little more shorthanded than usual.

Not only were they without the services of Luka Doncic, but Klay Thompson and Quentin Grimes were unavailable due to injury and illness.

Still, despite another undermanned roster, the Mavericks withstood two double-digit deficits and concluded their three-leg trek with a 129-119 win over the Atlanta Hawks.

With so many regular contributors to the offense out of the lineup, the Mavericks needed as many bodies that were available to take on an extra lift in the scoring department.

Kyrie Irving, who played through an illness plaguing several members of the team, mustered up the strength to shake off an off shooting night in Miami to lead the Mavericks with 32 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Sixteen of those points were scored in the fourth quarter.

Irving went on a scoring frenzy by nailing four of his five 3-point attempts in the fourth quarter, which helped Dallas create enough separation to cruise to their 10th victory of the season.

The Mavericks (10-8) are now 3-1 this season without Doncic in the lineup.

Jaden Hardy and Naji Marshall joined Irving, P.J. Washington and Dereck Lively II in the starting lineup in place of Thompson and Grimes.

Four different players scored 20 or more points for the Mavericks. Marshall scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds, while serving as one of the main ballhandlers in the absence of Doncic. Hardy’s first start of the season resulted in a season-high 21 points and he tied a career-high three steals. Spencer Dinwiddie bounced back from a poor shooting night on Sunday and finished with 20 points and four assists off the bench.

Washington had a balanced game on both ends of the floor with 11 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and one steal. His final block of the game was a chasedown on Trae Young with 58 seconds left. He celebrated the defensive play by standing at halfcourt while staring in the Hawks’ direction.

Thompson was in street clothes due to plantar fascia in his left foot. Grimes was absent from Monday’s game because of an illness that spread across several members of the Mavericks’ traveling party since Friday’s game in Denver.

Lively wasn’t listed on the initial injury report, he was ruled questionable to return midway through the third quarter because an illness. He did not start the second half and played just 11 minutes, finishing with two points, four rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

The Mavericks finished their first three-game road trip of the season winless, but fared better on this one with a 1-2 mark. or 2-1 mark.

The Mavericks will return to Dallas wounded and ill. Their next game isn’t until Wednesday against the Knicks. Doncic will miss that game since it falls on the final day before he is scheduled to be re-evaluated, but it’s unclear if those who are currently sick will be available.

Doncic scored a career-high 73 points in his last trip to Atlanta. He didn’t get the chance to try his attempt at an encore, but his stage-mate in Irving led the troops to a much-needed victory on the second night of a back-to-back.
