We already knew it, Jean-Luc Mélenchon has a sense of the formula. This time, he invented the concept of “media-political officiality”. In this way, he targets political leaders (from the right as well as the left) who dare to express disagreement with him and, even worse, the editorialists of all sensibilities who do not hesitate to describe his evolution and that of LFI towards the worse. What crime – ideological – did “media-political officiality” commit this time again?
The lefts in the Mélenchon trap, again and again
She takes the liberty of disapproving a bill from rebellious Northern MP Ugo Bernacilis aimed at repealing the offense of “apology for terrorism”. And why this sudden pressing need? Because this offense, created in 2014, “intensifies the exploitation of the fight against terrorism against freedom of expression and the means of the fight against terrorism have regularly been diverted from their purpose to repress freedom of expression “. Translation into good French: since the pogrom of October 7 perpetrated by Hamas killers, the Insoumis have not accepted that the justice system insists on holding them to account for their repeated provocations.
Thus Mathilde Panot, president of the LFI deputies, was heard for the first time after the press release issued immediately after the great massacre. This press release noted “an armed offensive by Palestinian forces in a context of intensification of the Israeli occupation policy”. No conviction… Absence of the words terrorism or terrorist… Mathilde Panot, along with European MP Rima Hassan, will be heard a second time as part of an investigation for “apology of terrorism”. Tam Tam immediately, cries of outrage, questioning of “freedom of expression”… The Insoumis then appropriated the case of Jean-Paul Delescaut, general secretary of the CGT departmental Union of the North. The trade unionist was in fact given a one-year suspended prison sentence – he appealed – because of a post-October 7 leaflet: “the horrors of the illegal occupation have accumulated. They receive the responses they provoked.” Understanding and justification of Hamas' crimes, no doubt. But justice, according to Mélenchon and his henchmen, should not interfere.
Scathing formula
Hence this proposed law.
Hence this new scandal, both political and ethical.
The Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau was content with a phrase that he wanted to be scathing: “it’s difficult to do more despicable”! Gabriel Attal, leader of the “Macronist” deputies, chose to address his socialist, ecological and communist peers. After mentioning “an insult and an indelible stain”, after noting that a “fundamental limit has been crossed, that of respect for all the victims of terrorism”, the former prime minister asked the “right” question to the democratic lefts, the only one that is valid: “will you be able to clearly dissociate yourself and thus defend our values”? The answer? Yes and no.
Yes, if we are to believe Carole Delga, socialist president of the Occitanie region who denounces “a new moral bankruptcy” due to “glorified terrorism”. But she is one of those socialists who, a long time ago, broke with LFI.
“Shipwreck”
Yes, if we trust the PS deputy Jérôme Guedj who denounces a “shipwreck” of Mélenchon and his people: “they got lost in the ambiguity – a mild euphemism – of their relationship to terrorism”. But he is one of those left-wing personalities upset by the neo-anti-Semitism of the Insoumis.
Yes but…, when we read and reread the customary arabesques of Olivier Faure, the first secretary of the PS: “this bill purely and simply repeals the offense of apologizing for terrorism [ce qu’il désapprouve] the definition of which only needs to be clarified to avoid deviations” [et voilà le point rendu aux Insoumis, puisqu’il semble reconnaître des « dérives »].
But why this ultra-provocative bill which, everyone knows, will never see the light of day? Once again, Jean-Luc Mélenchon intends to prove – to his own people, as well as to his competitors and adversaries – that he remains the strongest on the left, that his ignominies will not break the New Popular Front, this artificial, bogus union that he will never moderate his positions on the subject of the Israeli-Palestinian drama, which he has made of hatred of the Jewish State his political and ideological business. He pushes and pushes, convinced that socialists, ecologists and communists will once again end up going to bed.
So far, the facts prove him right.
