Return of report – On the ruins of Raqqa

Between 2014 and 2017, the city of Raqqa, in northeastern Syria, was under the control of the Islamic State, which had promoted it to the capital of its caliphate. In this city where ruined buildings stand, where children play in abandoned buses riddled with bullets, where there is not enough to eat, Hélène Lam Trong went to collect the memories of the inhabitants who are trying to rebuild themselves a daily life despite everything.

Teachers, artists, traders… They bear witness to the regime of terror imposed under the caliphate, but also to the violence of the bombings of the international coalition against Daesh, which wiped out the city at the same time as they chased out the jihadists. In Raqqa, now administered by Kurdish forces, many of them feel abandoned by the international community and fear that the city will fall back into the hands of Bashar Al-Assad's regime.

The documentary “Raqqa, the shadow of Daesh” directed by Hélène Lam Trong, will be broadcast on November 24 on 5.
