Wind gusts recorded at 171 km/h: due to the passage of depression Bert, 6 other departments placed on orange alert

After the storm Caetano which caused a snowy episode over a large part of France, the depression Bert brings with it a strong gust of wind.

This Sunday, the Pyrénées-Atlantiques were placed on orange Wind alert. Gusts of 114 km/h were flashed at Pointe de Socoa, and peaks of 171 km/h were recorded at Iraty (1427m).

This Monday, 6 other departments turned orange: Allier, Saône-et-Loire, Rhône, Loire, Haute-Loire and Puy-de-Dôme.

Uncertainty

“In connection with the passage of depression Bert over the British Isles, the south to southeast wind strengthens over the hours over the country. Strong gusts thus occur until the end of the afternoon over the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, with 100-110 km/h – possibly 120 km/h – on the Basque coast, 120 to 140 km/h on the ridges, 110 to 130 km/h in medium mountains and 90 to 100 km/h in the valleys”, specifies Météo France in its 1 p.m. bulletin.

“In the other Pyrenean departments, the strongest gusts should remain confined to the relief and not exceed 80 to 90 km/h in the valleys. On the Massif Central, up to the Gier valley and Lyonnais, the gusts should not not exceed 90 to 100 km/h before a reinforcement expected during the night from Sunday to Monday.

“Uncertainty still exists regarding a geographical extension of the phenomenon with strong gusts which may concern the neighboring departments of those placed in orange and in particular northern Isère. An extension of orange vigilance is not completely excluded at this stage” .
