WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is expected to nominate Brooke Rollins, president of the America First Policy Institute (AFPI), as agriculture secretary, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.
If confirmed, Rollins will lead an agency of 100,000 people with a budget of $437.2 billion in 2024.
Donald Trump's transition team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The America First Institute, AFPI, is a right-leaning think tank that previously held senior positions during Donald Trump's first term, and whose staff again worked closely with the Trump team. campaign of the Republican candidate for the last presidential election.
In the United States, the Secretary of Agriculture is responsible for negotiating trade agreements, dietary recommendations, health inspections and fighting forest fires.
The next secretary will notably have the mission to say whether he recommends the application of tax credits on biofuels, and how, at a time when the agricultural sector relies on the production of more sustainable fuels for aviation.
He will also lead next year's renegotiation of the trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada, against the backdrop of a dispute over Mexico's attempt to ban the import of genetically modified corn and a debate on Canadian milk quotas.
