Stromae is finally back. In shape and strong. For real. In recent months, fans and the media got excited when he posted an emoji on his social networks, was seen in a restaurant or at a fashion show with his stylist wife Coralie Barbier. But the concrete event is for this Saturday, November 23 at 9:00 a.m., with a new song which is establishing itself on streaming platforms. And as they say in “music business” jargon, it’s a “banger”. Crazy stuff, a remarkable performance, a huge hit.
The Arcane phenomenon
Its title? My Best Enemy. This is a duet recorded with the talented French singer (but Quebecois at heart) Pomme. The song was created for the soundtrack of season 2 ofArcane on Netflix. It cleverly coincides with the posting online this Saturday, November 23 of the last three episodes of this American-French animated series whose storyline takes place in the world of video games League of Legends. Both seasons currently have a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This shows if Stromae has targeted his return to the forefront.
Loneliness and doubt
Responding to the new codes of modern pop, My Best Enemy lasts only two minutes and twenty-eight seconds. That's not much for a comeback, some old-school minds will think. But it's just what it takes to blow up social media. A three-part electronic percussion beat, a dreamlike choir in the background, an echo effect in the sound loop. This is a simple, fair, effective, perfect single.
Stromae and Pomme respond to each other in a textual dance around modern solitude and perpetual doubt. “The day I met you, I wish that day had never happenedsings Stromae in the first verse before drawing his punchline: “Rather than being alone, it is better to be poorly accompanied.” The cover of the single was created by Wandakun, an artist who is a fan of Arcane, whose aesthetic he perfectly respects.
The song My Best Enemy also appears on the album “Arcane League Of Legends Season 2 (Soundtrack From The Animated Series)” which includes 22 compositions signed by a range of international artists. Stromae and Pomme rub shoulders with Tom Morello, guitarist of Rage Against The Machine, Woodkid, Imagine Dragons, Twenty One Pilots and the K Pop boy band Stray Kids. This soundtrack is also available from November 23.
The real comeback?
There remains a burning question. Is this a one shot from Stromae or the first salvo of an even more resounding comeback? He alone has the answer. Health first. In the meantime, we can only rejoice. This Thursday, November 21, the Maestro received an honorary distinction from the hands of King Philippe alongside twenty-four other Belgian figures. Multitude Tour, the film of his interrupted tour will be broadcast on December 6 on TMC and TF1 at 9:25 p.m. before being put online in its entirety on YouTube from December 14. With this new song, Stromae proves that he is everywhere again, and it is a real pleasure to have him back.
