Independent candidate Călin Georgescu, ranked first in the first round of the presidential elections, recently said that “NATO is the weakest alliance on earth” and that he would abandon it if he became president or prime minister. He also said that it is “an honor” that Romania did not enter the Schengen area.
In an interview on TVR 3, Georgescu said that NATO “is the weakest alliance on the face of the earth” and, “if things continue like this”, he would abandon it instantly, if he became president or prime minister, according to Pressone .

He also argued that Romania should be friends with everyone, including Putin's Russia and totalitarian China. Incidentally, he said the same thing at the Digi24 candidate debate.
“We did not choose our neighbors. The only policy of a wise state is to get along with everyone, especially the immediate neighbors and big countries,” he said.
On the other hand, he avoided answering the question – “Do you admire Putin?” – addressed by Digi24 moderators Liliana Ruse and Cosmin Prelipceanu.
“If he is a patriot in the country, that's their problem, we must be concerned with the situation of our country” or “It's not my job to answer such a thing” were two of the answers given by Georgescu to the insistence of the Digi24 moderators.
The question came after, in February 2022, shortly after Vladimir Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine, Georgescu told Realitatea Plus that Putin “is a man who loves his country”.
