LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The winter is already off and running on a much different note compared to the past several years when we didn’t get our first taste of winter weather until much, much later than normal. The light accumulations we’re getting with the current system are actually a bit earlier than normal.
My thought process about the upcoming winter changed over the past few weeks as the La Nina that was forecast to develop in the Pacific has failed to materialize. I think this scenario bodes a little better for cold and snow lovers.
I expect our temps from December through March to average out pretty close to normal, but this will come via some really wild swings. I expect a few arctic shots in the first half of winter to be balanced out by much milder-than-normal spells later on.
The winter also looks very active in terms of precipitation. Given the active storm track, we should be around normal to a little above normal for snowfall. Total precipitation this winter is likely to average above normal.
“The wild temp swings may also get us into some trouble from time to time and the Bold Forecast plays on this potential. Don’t be shocked if the same storm system brings us Winter Storm Warnings and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings to our region. It’s actually happened before, but it’s certainly not very common.
