Wicked—Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s movie adaptation of the classic Broadway musical—is new in theaters. Is there a scene during the end credits or post-credits that you should stay in your seats for?

Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked is the first part of a two-film adaptation of the landmark Broadway production that opened in 2003. Wicked plays in previews Thursday before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday, while Wicked: Part Two opens in theaters on November 21, 2025.

Erivo and Grande play Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, the roles originated by Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth on Broadway. The official logline for the movie musical version of Wicked reads, “Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman because of her green skin, and Glinda, a popular girl, become friends at Shiz University in the Land of Oz. After an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads.”

Wicked also stars Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero and Michelle Yeoh as Shiz headmaster Madame Morrible.

Do The End Credits Of ‘Wicked’ Tell Us Anything?

End credits or post-credits scenes generally either tie up loose ends for a scene earlier in a film or set up a transition scene to tease possible sequel.

Since Wicked: Part Two has long been in production, there’s no sense in Wicked’s studio, Universal Pictures, hinting the possibility of a sequel because the sequel is already in the works.

As such, there is no scene that takes place during or after the end credits of Wicked. After the final scene before the film’s end credits, the Wicked title treatment appears on the screen and underneath it appears the phrase, “To Be Continued.”

Director Jon M. Chu clearly knew that part one of Wicked had to end on a strong note and as such, he uses the production’s showstopping song Defying Gravity in the film’s final climactic scene to achieve that objective.

Otherwise, if Chu had inserted an end credits scene and/or a post-credits scene, it would have paled in comparison and undermined the sheer power of the performance of Defying Gravity.

Not only is the performance of Wicked’s signature song by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande electrifying—it’s enhanced even more by the dazzling visual effects that help drive the scene.

When all is said and done, the final gravity-defying scene of Wicked makes for the perfect cliffhanger teasing Wicked: Part Two—and there’s nothing an end credits or post-credits scene could have done to improve upon it.
