Today there is the onset of winter in the lowlands – from Thursday afternoon there will be widespread snowfall.

Now it’s definitely here: the onset of winter in the lowlands! According to forecasts, widespread snowfall will occur across Switzerland on Thursday afternoon. The first snow falls in French-speaking Switzerland in the morning, which then spreads to German-speaking Switzerland in the afternoon.

By Friday there will be 10 to centimeters of new snow in the lowlands. According to “MeteoSwiss”, 15 to 30 cm are expected on the northern slope of the Alps on Thursday alone – above 1,500 meters it could even be 30 to 40 cm. In northern Grisons, 10 to 30 cm of fresh snow is likely to fall above 1000 meters, and in central Grisons 5 to 15 cm of new snow is likely. By Friday evening another 15 to 25 cm is likely to be added on the northern slopes of the Alps and in northern Bünden – in central Bünden 5 to 10 cm.

There is also a risk of slippery snow and ice on both days. On Thursday the southwest wind will pick up towards the evening. That’s why the snow turns into sleet or rain up to around Seeland. Freezing rain is also possible locally.

As the first pictures from Linthal GL (650m above sea level) show, the first snow fell down to low altitudes shortly after midnight.

Nau.ch reporter Nico Leuthold reported at 1:00 a.m. that there were “maybe two to three centimeters” on the road.

According to “SRF Meteo”, there were probably local snow showers at night, especially in the Jura and the western Mittelland.

On Friday there will continue to be snow in the foothills of the Alps and on the northern slopes of the Alps. Otherwise there will only be local snow showers and even short sunny phases in between.

The snow showers will finally subside on Saturday night. Only on the northern slope of the Alps will it snow until Saturday morning – there will be a total of 60 to 80 centimeters of fresh snow.

On Friday morning it will be quite sunny in many regions. In the afternoon, denser cloud fields pass by. Temperatures rise to 3 to 5 degrees.

Finally, on Sunday and Monday there will be strong foehn blows in the Alps, driving temperatures in the valleys up to 15 degrees. But according to the forecast, it will also be mild in the north at 8 to 12 degrees.
