The English actor was the guest of Yann Barthès, on the TF1 show, to present the new film he is starring in, Heretic.

In almost perfect French and with his usual phlegm, Hugh Grant caused a sensation. This Wednesday, November 20, the English actor was the guest on the show Dailyon TF1, to promote his new film, Heretic. In this horror film directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, he plays a psychopath who enjoys trapping two young women, missionaries of the Mormon church, in his house. And certainly, the actor did his best to ensure that his participation in the show took place in French, but unfortunately he was not in very good shape.

“I’m jetlag,” he immediately confided to Yann Barthès, the host of Daily. Your show is going to be a disaster.” Received in the French style, the actor was quickly offered a cheese platter which he immediately accepted, all to a background of cicadas singing which made him say “this is my place”. Hugh Grant lives with his wife Anna Eberstein and their children in Eygalières, a town in Provence.

Villain roles “because I’m old”

Asked why he has been playing villain roles for several years, Hugh Grant explained with humor: “I don't know, those are the roles that I'm being offered at the moment because I'm old.” However, he added more seriously: “but it’s a moment in my career that amuses me a lot, all the actors prefer that.”

Recalling his roles in romantic comedies, where he sported a classy cut with silky hair, he commented that he had become his “own cliché”. “But that’s in the past,” he added, “I hope in any case.”

“Romantic comedies were a big lie”

The Briton had already admitted his preference for villain roles a long time ago. Most recently, in March 2023, during the promotion of the film Dungeons and Dragonshe declared: “Yes, the bad guys are much easier for me to play because, ultimately, it’s “me”. When I was starring in every romantic comedy, that was a big lie. It wasn't me at all. But I'm very happy, now that I'm old and ugly, it's much easier.

Old and ugly, it's up to everyone to judge for themselves. Meanwhile, his new role looks scary. To check this, you have to wait for the release ofHeretic in French cinemas on November 27.
