(THEWILL) – Brazil experienced another slip in their World Cup qualification campaign, with a 1-1 draw against Uruguay in a competitive CONMEBOL match early on Wednesday.
The result left the five-time world champions in fifth position with 18 points, trailing Colombia and Ecuador by a single point in the standings. The match remained goalless throughout the first half until Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde broke the deadlock in the 55th minute.
That precise long-range effort found the bottom corner, giving Uruguay the advantage at Arena Fonte Nova. However, their lead proved short-lived. Flamengo midfielder Gerson responded for Brazil seven minutes later, scoring his first international goal with a remarkable volley following a defensive error from Uruguay.
The equaliser energised the home side, though their subsequent attempts to find a winner proved unsuccessful, with efforts from Luis Enrique and Raphinha missing their intended target.
Uruguay’s performance strengthened their position in second place, accumulating 20 points, while Argentina leads the qualification group with 25 points. The qualification format ensures the top six teams will progress directly to the 2026 World Cup, which will take place across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
