It could not have been a worse start to the season for the Philadelphia 76ers and more specifically, Joel Embiid, who was reportedly called out by Tyrese Maxey in a team meeting after last night’s loss.
“The Sixers are a miserable team and they are an exhausting basketball team led by an exhausting star player,” Joe Giglio said on Tuesday’s 94WIP Midday Show, reacting to the aforementioned story by ESPN’s Shams Charania.
“Get him out of here today. Trade him tomorrow. This is ridiculous. The contract they gave him, it looks dumber by the minute.”
The Sixers lost 106-89 to the Heat last night, falling to 2-11 on the season.
“Maxey challenged Embiid to be on time to team activities, calling out the former league MVP about being late “for everything” and how it impacts the locker room,” Charania wrote and explained further on the Pat McAfee Show.
Embiid has played in just three games this season, as he “ramps up” from surgery he had on his knee last Spring and the Olympics this Summer.
Paul George has played in just seven games after a preseason knee injury and Maxey has played in just seven games as well, missing the last five with a hamstring strain.
Maxey is expected to return, according to Charania, for Wednesday’s game at Memphis or Friday’s game at home vs. Brooklyn. His return will mark the first time all three of Embiid, George, and Maxey will play together—assuming Embiid and George can remain healthy over the next three days.
