A significant change in the weather is just around the corner: it will be colder, stormier and wetter. For Bavaria, the depression “Quiteria” mainly brings snow with it.

Update from November 19th: The DWD has specified the expected situation in its updated weather report. Accordingly, a cold front will hit Bavaria from Wednesday night. The meteorologists write: “In the foothills of the Alps above 500-600 m there is slippery snow. In the Alps there was heavy snowfall from midnight onwards, there above 600-800 m 1-5, above 1000 m 5-10, in congested areas in the west up to 20 cm of fresh snow. In addition, there is slippery conditions in the eastern and northern low mountain ranges due to little snow.

DWD specifies the weather situation in Bavaria – meteorologists warn of snow and continuous rain

In addition, there is also continuous rain in Bavaria, the meteorologists warn, and that already on Tuesday: “In the northern low mountain ranges, amounts of around 30 l/sqm within 18 to 24 hours until Tuesday evening. In the Lower Allgäu from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday night, similar quantities occurred within about 12 hours.”

Severe weather map: Warnings for cities and counties

First report from November 18th: Munich – The first thick snowflakes enchanted Bavaria in many places this week. In some higher regions the white mass remained and created a small winter wonderland. For a few days now there has been talk of an onset of winter in the weather forecasts again, and deep “Quiteria” is on the way.

Deep “Quiteria”: DWD warns of squalls and continuous rain in Bavaria

According to meteorologist Sabine Krüger from the German Weather Service (DWD), the low mentioned will move over the north of Germany during Tuesday (November 18th). “Quiteria has different weather phenomena in its luggage, some of which are worth warning,” Krüger’s forecast continues. “In the middle and in the south, stormy gusts or squalls can be expected quite widely until the second half of the day, in the mountainous areas there will be heavy squalls, and in some mountain peaks, hurricane-force gusts.”

According to Krüger, it will rain at night, which will sometimes last longer; in the low mountain ranges, continuous rain can even be expected. Due to the drop in temperature, rain is increasingly coming down as snow at higher altitudes.

The DWD is therefore already warning of squalls for almost the entire Free State on Tuesday. Depending on the region, the warning applies from eight o’clock and sometimes until midnight. At the border with Hesse and Thuringia there is also an official warning about continuous rain from four o’clock. In northern Germany there could even be dangerous situations in some regions, and a storm surge is also on the way.

The onset of winter and snow in Bavaria: up to 25 centimeters remain

There probably won’t be enough for a snowball fight at lower altitudes. On Wednesday (November 20th), the day of repentance and prayer without school in Bavaria, it is expected to snow, especially in higher altitudes such as the Bavarian Forest or the Franconian Alb. But even there there will probably be no more than five centimeters of fresh snow, a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD) told dpa.

(By the way: Our Bayern newsletter informs you daily about all the important stories from Bavaria.)

A snowman could probably work, especially near the Alps. Above 600 meters the snow may remain in places, said the DWD expert. At high altitudes it could be up to 25 centimeters, but this is the exception.

Meteorologists warn of slippery conditions

In addition, according to the DWD, it will become slippery in many places over the course of the week. On Wednesday you can expect highs of two degrees in the Alps and five degrees in the rest of Bavaria. There will also be strong to stormy winds from the west.

As the week progresses, there will also be repeated showers, which, according to Krüger’s forecast, will often fall as snow down to low altitudes, depending on the intensity. According to the weather expert, a real snow cover is unlikely due to the warm soils at lower altitudes, or rather it will not last long. “It is likely to become increasingly wintry in the mountainous areas.” (tkip)
