Women in power and playing the recorder with their nose: this was ‘The smartest person in the world’

Monday evening’s winner

Bo Van Spilbeeck was the winner of the evening with 428 seconds and thus moved directly to the next episode.

The loser

After two episodes it’s over for Anastasya Chernook. In the 3-6-9 round, Chernook managed to gain ten seconds on the action question. And the second round also went smoothly. That was not the case for Daphne Agten. She started the puzzle round with only 67 seconds. Chernook with 113, Van Spilbeeck 136. She could hardly believe it herself, but after the puzzle round Chernook was in the lead with 173 seconds. The photo round went less smoothly for the influencer. Only four of the ten tennis guitar players managed to name them.

It didn’t take long before it was clear that Chernook had to play the final. She had to compete against the – so far still unbeatable – Agten. And it became clear once again that the actress is unbeatable. Although Chernook managed to reduce her opponent’s time nicely and it became exciting, she was not able to give enough correct answers to the question: “What do you know about Selena Gomez?” (Read more below the photo)

Newcomer on Tuesday

On Tuesday, Van Spilbeeck and Agten will compete against actor Thibaud Dooms.

The best quotes

Erik Van Looy: “Do you know each other, Soundos and Jennifer?”

Soundos El Ahmadi: “I kind of have girl crush on Jennifer.”

Jennifer Heylen: “Stop, stop. No, don’t stop, keep going.”

El Ahmadi: “Of course I didn’t know the program ‘The smartest person’. I just wanted to be on the jury, and then I had to participate as a candidate. Whateveryou know the story. And then I saw Jennifer at one point and I thought, ‘Where does this woman come from? She’s beautiful, she’s charismatic, she’s talented, she’s amazing, she has a vision for the future.” And now I know why I like her so much: it’s like looking in the mirror.”

Van Looy: “I’m the only man here tonight. Do you like that?”

Heylen and El Ahmadi: “We, man?”

El Ahmadi: “My voice is lower than yours.”

***

Van Looy: “Soundos, what about Anastasya?”

Anastasya Chernook: “It’s a bit West Flemish, isn’t it.”

El Ahmadi: “Yes, but this is just a drunk Amsterdammer. I understand you completely.”

***

El Ahmadi: “That sounds cool, Kyrgyzstan.”

Chernook: “You can ride horses there in the mountains. But that is at your own risk.”

Van Looy: “Do accidents happen there with those horses in the mountains?”

Chernook: “Yes, ‘accidents’.”

Van Looy: “What do you mean?”

Chernook: “If you don’t want someone, take them to Kyrgyzstan. You can arrange that there for an apple and an egg.”

He Ahmadi: “Erik, what are you doing this summer?” (Read more below the post)

Most notable anecdotes

Through her years of experience as a journalist, Bo Van Spilbeeck has met some world leaders. “Who was the most sympathetic?” Van Looy wondered. “Castro was very special in his own way,” said Van Spilbeeck. “That one was even crazier in real life,” she said. “VTM existed for ten years, and my editor-in-chief called me to ask if I could ask Castro to wish us a happy tenth anniversary. I thought it was completely crazy, but I dared to do it anyway.”

And Castro also acceded to that request. “Just at that moment it was forty years of the Cuban revolution. He said, ‘Keep up the good work. It is not yet as much as the Cuban revolution, but watch out for the Americans,” the journalist said. “And he spoke perfect Dutch?” Van Looy replied.

Agten has broken many legs in her life, she said during the puzzle round. And politician Jo Brouns may have something to do with that. “Minister Jo Brouns is my archenemy.” Brouns wished the actress good luck when it was announced that Agten would be in the film Holy Rosita would play. Break a leghe wrote on a card. The next day she broke her ankle in two places. “That was no coincidence. Jo Brouns is trying to get in my way. And I don’t know why yet,” she said, laughing.

Most beautiful moments

The candidates were allowed to try out the hidden talent of actor Freddie Highmore: playing the recorder with their nose. “I can’t play this,” Van Spilbeeck said before she shoved the recorder up her nose. Chernook could do it according to the jury members, who then also gave it a try. (Read more below the photo)

“A very good trick to reduce stress is to imagine the audience in their underpants,” said comedian Jade Mintjes during the ‘Open Door’ round. “But I think I’m visualizing a little too much, because now I’m starting to see people in their underwear in strange places. Like the sound man, who is also in his underpants,” she says. And Mintjes doesn’t imagine that. “That gives me much less stress,” says the sound engineer. “Why not actually,” Mintjes responds. Speaking of people in their underpants, “what do you know about Ben Weyts?” (Read more below the photo)

The ‘mosh pit’ phenomenon was discussed in the puzzle round. Van Looy admitted that he accidentally ended up in it during Joost Klein’s performance. And there are images of that. (Read more below the photo)
