The Confederation of African (CAF) has revealed the five candidates for the title of African Player of the Year 2024. The Nigerian Ademola Lookman (27 years old) and the Moroccan Achraf Hakimi (26 years old) are part of the list of finalists.

Ademola Lookman (Nigéria/Atalanta), Achraf Hakimi (Maroc/PSG), Simon Adingra (Ivory Coast/Brighton), Serhou Guirassy (Guinea/Borussia Dortmund) et Ronwen Williams (South Africa / Mamelodi Sundowns) complete the list.

CAF initially published a list of ten candidates in October, but has now narrowed it down to five. Notable absentees include Africa Cup of Nations best player William Troost-Ekongthe Burkinabé international Edmond Tapsoba – who played an essential role in the invincibility series of the Bayer Leverkusen last season – and the Congolese Chancel Mbemba.

The 2024 edition of the CAF awards, scheduled to take place in Marrakech, Morocco on December 16, will crown a new African player of the year after the exclusion of Nigerian Victor Osimhenstar the Galatasarayfrom the final list of nominees.

According to CAF, the awards will reward performances achieved between January 2024 and October 2024.

Williams earned his second nomination in the Goalkeeper of the Year category. He will try to overtake the Manchester United star and Cameroon Andre Onanathe Nigerian Stanley Nwabalithe Ivorian Yahia Fofana and the Egyptian Mostafa Shobeir to win the title of best goalkeeper.

South African Williams is in contention for a third prize, having also been nominated for the CAF Interclub Player of the Year award. He is joined on the list by Issoufou Dayo (Burkina Faso/RS Berkane), Ahmed Sayed ‘Zizo’ (Egypt/Zamalek), Hussein El Shahat (Egypt/Al Ahly), et Mostafa Shobeir (Egypt/Al Ahly).

The men’s national team of the year includes reigning African champions Ivory Coast, as well as Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Coaches of the Year list includes Pedro Goncalves (Angola), Faé emerged (Ivory Coast), SEbastien Desabre (RD Congo), Marcel Koller (Al Ahly), et Hugo Broos (South Africa).

Al Ahly (Egypt), Zamalek (Egypt), RS Berkane (Morocco), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) andEsperance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia) will compete for the title of Men’s Club of the Year.
