Tenerife is hosting a Spanish international match for only the fourth time. All the more surprising: Switzerland has already played there once.

When the Swiss national team meets Spain away from home in the last Nations League game of the year on Monday evening, it will only be the Iberians’ 4th international match in Tenerife. “La Roja” last appeared on the Canary Islands 28 years ago. Back then, Spain beat Slovakia 4-1 in the 1998 World Cup qualification.

You can follow the national team’s final Nations League game in Spain on Monday from 8:00 p.m. on SRF two and in the live stream on srf.ch/sport. The game starts at 8:45 p.m.
You can also follow the game live on the radio on SRF 3.
The first two international matches at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, which was built in 1925 and renovated in 1949 and 2000, were friendly games. In February 1994 there was a 1-1 draw against Poland. At the international premiere in Tenerife on December 13, 1989 there was a 2-1 home win. The opponent back then: Switzerland.
Knup scored against Zubizarreta
Goalie icon Andoni Zubizarreta guarded the goal for the Spaniards. The no less legendary Emilio Butragueno swirled in the storm.
And in Switzerland? In the team of then coach Uli Stielike, a certain Urs Fischer made his international debut in defense. And the long-standing Swiss record national player Heinz Hermann (118 international matches) appeared in the national team uniform for the 99th time. Adrian Knup scored the goal to make it 1-1.
