On November 15, 2024, President José Raúl Mulino sanctioned Law 456 that declares Panamanian cultural heritage. Panama Transisthmian Colonial Route.

The new law establishes that the route includes six important sites in the country: the Monumental Complex of Portobelo and San Lorenzo, Monumental Complex of the Old Town, Archaeological Site of Panama Viejo, the Camino Real, the Camino de Cruces and the ruins of the Capilla de la Palangana or Capilla de Cárdenas.

The objective, the norm highlights, is to protect, conserve, guard, safeguard and highlight its historical and cultural value.

The law indicates that it will be the National Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture that will establish the UTM coordinates with the date WGS84the location of the route of the Trans-Isthmic Colonial Route of Panama, in its two phases. These coordinates will be part of the scientific research initiative that will be developed under the supervision of said direction.

In addition, a buffer area is created for the Camino Real, the Camino de Cruces and the ruins of the Capilla de la Palangana, which must be kept free of constructions and alterations to the natural and cultural environment, except those necessary for the visit. interpretation, enhancement and study of the sites.

Those who carry out excavations without authorization and carry out construction work to the detriment of these sites will be sanctioned in accordance with the provisions of the Penal Code.
