What is prime time?
Primetime refers to the prime time on classic television. This is the time when viewing figures are particularly high. Primetime is therefore the most important period for broadcasters and advertisers. In Germany, programs that start at 8:15 p.m. are considered primetime highlights, although media scientists also apply the term to the entire evening program until 11 p.m.
Prime time in Germany – why 8:15 p.m.?
In Germany there is another reason why 8:15 p.m. has established itself as prime time. The reason for this is the “Tagesschau”, which, since its first broadcast almost 70 years ago, has been broadcasting promptly from 8:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Many viewers now expect that programs only start at 8:15 p.m. – even if they are not an audience of the “Tagesschau”.
Prime time on radio
Prime time on the radio is known as “drive time” and is between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. At these times, commuters who are on their way to work or home are particularly targeted – traditionally in their cars, hence the name. In so-called daytime, however, only a smaller proportion of listeners are reached.
