Donald Trump has announced that he will include neither Nikki Haley, former ambassador to the UN, nor Mike Pompeo, former secretary of state, in his future administration. This statement, published on TruthSocial, puts an end to speculation regarding the composition of his potential cabinet: “I will not invite Haley or Pompeo to join the administration in formation. I have greatly enjoyed working with them and I welcome them thank you for their service to our nation.”
According to Politico, sources familiar with the matter reveal that Pompeo made a “concerted effort” to obtain the post of secretary of defense. These attempts were met with strong opposition from Trump's entourage, including his son Donald Jr. and political commentator Tucker Carlson. “He's burned his wings with Mike and Haley in the past,” says a source, adding that Pompeo's foreign policy positions “don't match those of the president.”
Nikki Haley responded on Let's move forward toward a stronger, more secure America for the next four years.”
The move comes after a period of tension, particularly with Haley running against Trump in the Republican primary. She notably declared: “Republicans know what a disaster Trump has been and will continue to be, they are simply afraid to tell the truth.” Despite these criticisms, she finally rallied to her candidacy after her withdrawal from the race.
The two excluded figures are known for their strong support for Israel. Pompeo, an evangelical Christian, wrote in his autobiography that he was “determined to keep Israel stronger than ever,” while Haley served as Israel's “shield” at the United Nations during his tenure.
