The finale of season 4 of Astrid and Raphaëlle had its share of surprises in store for the two investigators. In the last minutes of episode 8, Raphaëlle (Lola Dewaere) learned that she was pregnant with Nicolas (Benoit Michel). An unexpected pregnancy which greatly destabilized the policewoman.
Raphaëlle has a miscarriage
In the first episode of season 5, which takes place two months after the events of the finale, Raphaëlle, who prefers to sink into denial, refuses to take a blood test to confirm the pregnancy.
On top of that, she still hasn't told her partner the news. Finally, at Astrid's insistence, she finally decides to inform Nico and confirm the pregnancy with a medical examination.
If the two lovers are stressed but delighted to learn that they are going to be parents, their happiness is short-lived. At the end of the second episode, after falling down the stairs, Raphaëlle has a miscarriage.
A few weeks ago, AlloCiné spoke with Alexandre de Seguins, the creator and screenwriter of Astrid and Raphaëlle so that he could explain to us why the authors chose not to go through with this pregnancy.
A difficult choice
“There were many factors in our choice”, told us the screenwriter, who explained to us that sometimes, the story takes a turn that the authors would not necessarily have envisaged when they start writing.
“In season 1, we killed Astrid's guardian, who was the director of criminal documentation. And at the time, we said to ourselves that we couldn't do that, because this character was great and he allowed us to do a lot of things.“
“He was a character and an actor to whom we were all attached. But at one point our story was heading in that direction. Once the story took this direction, there was no going back.”.
And in the case of Raphaëlle's pregnancy, the authors originally had in mind that Raphaëlle would give birth to her baby. “Initially we had the idea at the end of season 4 to have a Raphaëlle with a baby.
“And then finally, in the writing of the episode, and in the dilemmas that it raised, the plot sort of wrote itself, and it took that direction.. We write the stories but from time to time, it's a bit like the story writes itself.”
“And that's what happened in this case, because there was something very strong that went well with Raphaëlle's character. And it was also very interesting in what it could lead to for her, particularly in her relationship with Astrid. So it happened a little in spite of us.”
