“HRİSTODULİDİS TAKEN A WELL ASSESSMENT OF THE OPPORTUNITY”
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen evaluated the short meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the President of the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus Nikos Hristodulidis in Budapest, in the “On the Day” program presented by Nazar Erişkin on Channel T.
Sözen stated that Hristodulidis represented his country on international platforms and said, “Hristodulidis’ request for this meeting was about giving the appearance of being ready for negotiations and reinforcing his aim of taking an active stance on the Cyprus issue, and he made good use of this opportunity.” Sözen underlined that such humanitarian communications always occur and said, “A close relationship between Greece and Turkey will reduce the tension in Cyprus. “This is an unofficial example,” he said.
As you may remember, Sözen also touched upon the encounter between TRNC President Ersin Tatar and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a hotel in the past, and stated that such encounters were natural and could have been unconstructed meetings. Stating that due to the busy agenda of international meetings, presidents can only come together for short moments such as coffee breaks, Sözen said, “Many issues can come to the agenda in such 3-5 minute or ten minute meetings.”
