Defeating Fenerbahçe 3-1 at home in the fourth week of the UEFA Europa League, AZ Alkmaar coach Marteen Martens said that they had an unforgettable evening.
Speaking at the press conference after the match played at AZ Stadium, Martens congratulated his team and said, “It was an unforgettable evening. We had a little difficulty in the first half. Dzeko could not take advantage of a few opportunities in the first half. But I am very happy about the second half. This was necessary for us. We played a very brave game. Fenerbahçe has very good players. This win was an extra motivation for us.” He made a statement.
Emphasizing that the young players looked ready for the match even though there were many missing players in the team, Martens said, “We did not prepare for this match today. We have been keeping the young players ready since the beginning of the season. They took advantage of this chance today.” he said.
“We know where we will hurt Fenerbahçe and we are prepared for this,” he said at the press conference held yesterday. Martens, reminded of his words, said:
“We knew we would put high pressure. We are good at these things from time to time. We knew that Fenerbahçe would also make mistakes. We had such chances twice in the second half, but we could not finish them. Still, we put the pressure on both high balls and ground balls well. I knew we would be successful in this too.”
