In a crucial alert for travelling supporters, Tottenham Hotspur has collaborated with the British Embassy in Turkiye to advise fans about heightened security measures and tensions in Istanbul, a response to the recent tragic events in the region.
The city has been on edge since a harrowing attack on October 23, which left seven individuals dead and over 20 injured near the capital, Ankara, specifically at the headquarters of Turkish Aerospace Industries.
As more than 2,000 Spurs fans make their way to Istanbul on Thursday for the Europa League clash against Galatasaray, concerns abound regarding potential flashpoints. This anxiety is attributed not only to the ongoing terror threat but also to the unfolding war in the Middle East, compounded by the club’s Jewish heritage, which tends to resonate through chants and displays among supporters.
In light of these complications, Tottenham has issued a statement urging ticket holders to exercise patience, particularly as they pass through increased security measures upon arriving at the stadium.
Additionally, fans are reminded to adhere to the club’s flag policy prior to the match at Rams Park. All flags must receive prior approval from both Galatasaray and local authorities, and must also possess a valid fire certificate.
As Spurs gear up to face their Istanbul rivals, the warnings extend to the club’s regulations regarding banners, which explicitly prohibit any displays that pertain to political or religious sentiments.
The match is set against a backdrop of tension, coming less than a month after the armed incident in Ankara.
“Tottenham Hotspur firmly believes that football matches should serve as a platform to express allegiance to one’s team. They should not be venues for showcasing flags related to political or religious ideologies, especially in periods of discord or campaigning, as these can escalate already tense situations,” the club advised in reference to their flag policy.
