Red Bull Salzburg has treated Feyenoord to its second home defeat in the Champions League. The Rotterdam team had no answer to Pepijn Lijnders’ plan, who showed the visitors the way to a surprising victory in De Kuip.
Fate is not favorable to Feyenoord’s strikers. After Santiago Gimenez and Ayase Ueda, Julián Carranza also reported to the sickbay. That meant that Brian Priske had to figure things out for the meeting with Salzburg. The Dane chose to position Ibrahim Osman at the point of attack and insert Bart Nieuwkoop as a right winger. Luka Ivanusec started on the left flank, Igor Paixão as number 10.
Feyenoord, which came in with Jordan Lotomba as right back and Timon Wellenreuther instead of the injured Justin Bijlow, went on the hunt for the third Champions League victory in a row in De Kuip. The Rotterdam team did this with conviction, but an early opening goal failed to materialize. Salzburg held their ground and started to bite back more. As Lijnders had promised in advance, the Austrians showed that they dared to put a lot of pressure.
Feyenoord had a hard time with that, but Priske’s team seemed to make it to the break unscathed. In the second minute of stoppage time of the first half, something went wrong. Wellenreuther wanted to pass the ball to Paixão, but the Brazilian had not counted on that at all. Oscar Gloukh then found the head of Karim Konaté, who had escaped the attention of the defense and was able to head in without an outlaw.

Konaté strikes for the second time
Priske decided to intervene halfway and brought on Anis Hadj Moussa and Chris-Kévin Nadje for Ibrahim Osman and Jordan Lotomba, who remained in the dressing room. The support of The Legion was supposed to provide some support, but Feyenoord’s problems quickly piled up. A corner from Bobby Clark stuck in front of Wellenreuther’s goal and fell at the feet of Konaté, who reacted more alertly than Gernot Trauner.
Grumpy and impatience
After Konaté’s second goal, not only the grumpiness, but also the impatience increased. Feyenoord took the initiative and also had opportunities. Nieuwkoop’s header went just wide, Nadje’s shot lacked conviction. In the last quarter – Gijs Smal and Thomas Beelen replaced Nieuwkoop and Quinten Timber – Feyenoord looked even more emphatically for a goal.
A red card from Nadje made that mission a lot more difficult. The substitute played the ball and then landed on the foot of Lucas Gourna-Douath. Referee Donatas Rumsas initially gave a yellow card, but sent Nadje off the field after a VAR intervention. With a clever foot movement, Hadj Moussa still scored the tying goal. The fire returned to De Kuip, but that turned out to be short-lived.
Salzburg decision
Although Konaté first missed a penalty (after a foul by Dávid Hancko) and failed to score his third, Feyenoord’s ten team could no longer claim a result. Daouda Guindo gave the final push. The substitute made the decision five minutes before the end with a shot from the edge of the box.
For Red Bull Salzburg it was the first victory in the group stage of the Champions League. Feyenoord will have to rely on away matches for the time being. The Rotterdam team won on foreign soil against both Girona and Benfica. Things also went wrong at home against Bayer Leverkusen.
