Feyenoord 1-3 RB Salzburg: Karim Konate scores twice in Champions League tie

Karim Konate scored twice and missed a penalty as RB Salzburg beat Feyenoord to get their first points in this season’s Champions League.

The visitors, who had lost to Sparta Prague, and Dinamo Zagreb in their opening three ties, took the lead in first-half added time through Konate’s close-range header.

Salzburg doubled their advantage in the 58th minute as the Ivorian striker got his second, reacting quickest to score a half-volley from eight yards out.

Feyenoord’s Chris-Kevin Nadje was sent off for standing on the ankle of Lucas Gourna-Douath, with the red card given after an intervention from the video assistant referee (VAR).

Despite only playing with 10 men, the hosts pulled a goal back through Anis Hadj Moussa, before another VAR decision gave Salzburg a penalty.

Konate had a chance to complete his hat-trick but his spot-kick bounced off the crossbar.

Salzburg, though, scored their third shortly afterwards thanks to Daouda Guindo’s powerful strike.

Feyenoord have now won two and lost two of their four matches and next play on Tuesday, 26 November with a trip to Manchester City.

Salzburg, who are 30th in the league table, will need to gain some shock results if they are to stay in the competition as their final four games are against Bayer Leverkusen, St-Germain, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
