Liverpool are top of the UEFA Champions League and have Simon Mignolet to thank. In 2024!

They are also the only team with four wins. Aston Villa had the chance to join them on Wednesday evening but fell 1-0 at Club Brugge.

A bizarre penalty made the difference. Tyrone Mings picked up the ball in the area, presumably not believing a goal kick had been taken (despite witnessing said goal kick). That penalty was converted and Villa just couldn’t find a way through.
So who can Liverpool thank for the latter bit there? Simon Mignolet.
That’s right, the Belgian goalkeeper has helped secure Liverpool top spot in the Champions League by keeping a clean sheet against Villa. It’s 2024 and Mignolet is delivering for the Reds.
Liverpool, Liverpool top of the league
That was the shout around Anfield as the Leverkusen game drew to a close. Liverpool are sitting pretty at the top of the Champions League table – and are the first team ever to do so on points.
The start has been virtually flawless and you’ll do well to see a better performance anywhere in the competition than the 4-0 over Xabi Alonso’s side. Now we’re just hoping the next four fixtures are solid enough for the top-eight finish every team craves.
The top eight, after all, will qualify straight for the Last 16. The next 16 teams will instead play a Play-off round – meaning finishing towards the top gets you a two-match break.
Liverpool will be desperate for that and are well on their way. They’ve got at least a two-point lead on everyone else, after all.
And Mignolet is one we can thank.
