The case of the favorites: Real Madrid and Manchester City suffered significant defeats in the Champions League on Tuesday (November 5th, 2024).

The Royals once again disappointed the fans at the Bernabeu in the first game after the Clasico defeat against FC Barcelona (0-4). Coach Carlo Ancelotti's team lost 1:3 (1:2) to AC Milan. Vinicius Junior brought the Royals back into the game after Malick Thiaw's early 1-0 win (12') with a penalty he took himself (23'), but after that nothing worked.

Alvaro Morata (39th) and Tijjani Reijnders (73rd) sealed Real's deserved defeat. Madrid did not play last weekend because the league game at Valencia FC was canceled due to the storm there.

Lisbon ends next city series

But Real wasn't the only top favorite for the title who had a bad Tuesday evening. Manchester City came under the wheels at Sporting Lisbon, the Portuguese won 4-1 (1-1) despite Phil Foden's early City lead (4th). Victor Gyökeres scored three goals (38th/49th/80th), including two penalties, and Maximiliano Araujo also scored (46th). Erling Haaland missed a penalty for Manchester when the score was 1:3.

It was the second defeat in a row for coach Pep Guardiola's team. In the Premier League, the English champions had their first defeat after 32 games at AFC Bournemouth (1:2) at the weekend. The “Citizens” had been unbeaten in the Champions League since May 2022 until their visit to Lisbon.

A special story: It was the last game for Sporting coach Ruben Amorim, who starts his job at Manchester United on Monday (November 11th, 2024). He celebrated a perfect transition with a win against his future local rivals.

Monaco stays ahead

While two favorites stumbled, a surprise team continued to cause a sensation. After the 1-0 (0-0) win at FC Bologna, AS Monaco already has ten points and is currently in third place in the table. Like Thiaw for Milan, a former FC Schalke 04 player also scored for Monaco – Thilo Kehrer scored the decisive goal (87th).

In another French-Italian duel, OSC and Juventus Turin drew 1-1 (1-0). Dusan Vlahovic equalized Jonathan David's lead (27th) with a penalty after an hour. In the early games, PSV Eindhoven (4-0 against FC Girona) and Dinamo Zagreb (4-1 at Slovan Bratislava) had clear successes.
