Auchan announced the elimination of 2,389 positions on Tuesday November 5, causing shock among its employees. Three hypermarkets will close completely. Among them, that of Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dôme) and that of Bar-le-Duc (Meuse). For ten years, traffic to Auchan stores has been in constant decline. The group has not resisted the competition which focuses on low prices. The group holds 5% of the mass distribution market share and ranks fifth, far behind other brands.
“There is the double problem of price and quality of stores (…) Competitors have progressed and Auchan has remained in a store model from the early 1990s”analyzes Yves Puget, editorial director of LSA. Auchan has decided to reduce the surface area of 65 stores by 25% on average. The household appliances or telephone sections will sometimes disappear.
