Trump-Harris: when will the results be known in swing states?

DDonald Trump and Kamala Harris each say they are confident in their victory. If we believe the polls, everything will be decided by just a few tens of thousands of votes, in seven so-called pivotal states. When will these results be known?

The first state to close its polling stations is Georgia at 7 p.m. New York time (1 a.m. Belgian time). North Carolina follows at 7:30 p.m. (1:30 a.m.). Many voters voted early in these two states, according to the New York Times. The first results are therefore expected early in the night. According to the American daily, if Kamala Harris came first in these two states, Donald Trump’s chances of winning would be reduced. On the contrary, if the Republican wins these states, we would have to wait for the results of the three swing states of the “Blue Wall”, namely Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin (the Blue Wall brings together the states which voted for the Democrats during every presidential election from 1992 to 2012. The three swing states voted for Donald Trump in 2016, before returning to Democrats in 2020).

Pennsylvania will follow, whose polling stations close at 8 p.m. (2 a.m.). As the ballots cannot be counted before the Election Day in this state. In Michigan, polls close at 9 p.m. (3 a.m.). In 2020 and 2022, only half of the ballots had been counted by midnight (6 a.m.). Results from Wisconsin are expected late at night (in the morning, in Belgium).

How could each candidate win?

According to the New York Times, Trump’s best way to win would be to win Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina while Kamala Harris is expected to come out on top in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. If these states were to be divided between the two candidates, the name of the new president could be delayed.

Polling stations in the last two swing states, Arizona and Nevada, will close at 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. respectively, but many voters in these two states vote by mail and we would potentially have to wait several days before obtaining the final results.
