On Monday, Kamala Harris' campaign teams warned of a potentially long delay before knowing the final results of the election, while pointing out the risk of attempts at destabilization on the part of Donald Trump and his supporters. In a context marked by high anticipated participation, more than 75 million Americans have already voted, the wait for the results could stretch over several days, or even beyond, in certain key states.

“New ballots will continue to be counted several days after the election. This is obviously not a sign of fraud, it’s just the way it works,” Democratic campaign chairwoman Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a conference call with reporters. She estimated that the outcome of the election could remain uncertain until the end of next week, due to the slow counting in some of the seven key states, including Pennsylvania and Nevada.

“An incredibly close race”

“We think this race is going to be incredibly close, which means we may not know the results of this election for several days,” she added, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding this election. This caution expressed by the Democratic campaign echoes the growing concern over repeated accusations of electoral fraud made by the Republicans.

Donald Trump's camp accuses the Democrats of engaging in “fraud” and “cheating” in several key states. These baseless claims could, according to Democrats, be an attempt to justify a possible challenge to the results if Kamala Harris were to win the election.

Reforms in 2020 to ensure safer voting

Dana Remus, chief adviser to Kamala Harris' campaign, reacted firmly. “We cannot and will not let Donald Trump denigrate the election or our institutions with his repeated attempts to sow chaos and doubt,” she said. She noted that electoral reforms adopted after the 2020 election helped make voting “easier and safer than ever” in most key states.

For Jen O'Malley Dillon, pivotal states such as Pennsylvania and Nevada will be particularly slow to publish final results, with these not expected until November 8 or 9. Pennsylvania, in particular, is seen as a crucial state in determining the outcome of this election.
